Late eighteenth century ca 1780 Portuguese silver brooch set with chrysolite. All the stones are foiled. Portugal controlled the colonial Brazilian supply of topaz and peridot and olivine or chrysolite. Instead of selling the raw material to other Europeans they supplied the local market but the gems unique colour and vibrancy made these items very desirable in all of Europe. In England especial these items were popular in the late eighteenth century.
